| John 8:56-59 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day and he saw it…Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM." In verse 57 the Jews wanted to know how Abraham could have seen Jesus when Jesus wasn't even 50 years old. Jesus replied by saying He was "I AM." The Jews knew Jehovah's eternal name is "I AM" (Ex. 3:14). Because He claimed to be God, they tried to stone Him (8:59). (The NWT mistranslates this to "Before Abraham came into existence, I have been.") |
| John 10:30-31 "I and the Father are one." The Jews answered Him, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God." The Jews understood that Jesus claimed to be God, and this is why they wanted to stone Him for blasphemy. |
